Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
