EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
