2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Change Comes After Lukewarm Reception
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a distinct vision.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to address community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to continue.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last fall’s the game playtest was informative. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to heart and revamped the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our fans.
The trust in this project strengthens every day. To boost the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of the team. Following some time of conversations, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming field is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to come.
David
Experience of the New Leader
The appointee currently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year alongside a community playtest. At the time, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling step forward on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Take on the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and tests that change every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, risk it all, and hope your group can secure victory? The option is up to you."
The game lacks an announced debut schedule or platforms, but fans can anticipate additional details as creation continues.
